Ellen Haylock Havers was born in 1816 in West Wratting, Cambs. England. In 1837 she eloped with John Coles Havers of Haverhill in Suffolk, England. John Havers was the "butcher boy" who delivered meat to the Haylock family at their estate, The Manor at West Wratting. It is said that Edward Haylock, a gentleman farmer (b. 1762), was so angry at his daughter's elopement to a young man of lesser class that he never spoke to her again. Ellen and John Coles Havers emigrated to the USA after her father's death in 1846. She carried on an extensive correspondence with her mother and her siblings, received a family inheritance, and a visit from her youngest brother, George, after emigrating to the USA. All of Ellen's children were born in Canada and in Michigan in the United States.
