John Cole Havers Family History

An elopment in 1837 led to the emigration of this branch of the Havers/Haylock family to Canada and the USA. When Ellen Dorothy Haylock Eloped with John Cole Havers on the first day of the New Year in 1838 she so angered her father, Edward Haylock, of West Wratting, Cambs., that he never spoke to her again. Edward Haylock owned a modest manor house and considerable farmland and other buildings and property in West Wratting. Ellen was one of sixteen children he and Doroth Browning Haylock raised in that small village. It seems Edward couldn't approve of his daughter's elopment with the 'butcher boy' who delivered meat to the Haylock family home. However Ellen maintained an active correspondence with her siblings until her death in 1909 in Flint, Michigan. Many of these letters have been saved by her descendents. John Cole Havers expected a visit from his brother, Cole Havers in Canada in the mid 1800's before his death at age fifty-four.

Ellen and John Cole Havers lived for nine years in England, it is believed in London, before they emigrated to New York. The father of the children in the picture below, George Havers, Sr. would have been born in London if they had emigrated but six months later. Instead he was born in New York upon their arrival in the United States. From New York the family moved to Sarnia, Canada where six additional children were born. These children became the parents of numerous descendants of Ellen and John Cole Havers in the United Staes and Canada as they all have large families, many times with sets of fraternal twins which is a family trait following through generations. Ellen Haylock Havers was a twin with her sister Agnes, who died in 1832 at the age of 16.

The musical talent in the family has also been passed from one generation to another. Family oral history recalls Ellen as an accomplished pianist, with family letters of now deceased grandchildren of John and Ellen telling of her considerable talent, haveing heard her at the piano as children before Ellen's death in 1909. It is also said that Ellen Haylock was an accomplished horsewoman before he elopment with John Cole Havers.

Perhaps one of the most distinguished grandchildren of John Cole Havers and Ellen Haylock Havers was Ernest Havers, a son of George Havers who was not a member of the band. He designed and manufactured an automobile known as the Havers Six. This was a luxury automobile that was built at the Havers Motor Car Factory in Port Huron, Michigan. There is now a small museum in Port Huron that houses the automobile. One of the oribinal automobiles was used by American film star, Debbie Reynolds in the film, The Unsinkable Molly Brown. Unfortunately, production was halted when a fire destroyed the factory on July 8, 1914, after less than four years in business.
